 ⁄ RENOVATE ⁄  MAINTENANCE ⁄  I’M A BURGLAR – HERE’S HOW TO OUTSMART ME

From burglars’ mouths to your ears: Here are the vulnerabilities they look for when they’re deciding whether to rob you blind.

  1. Keep a car parked in your driveway - burglars think twice if there is a car parked in a driveway

  2. Keep your doors and windows locked - burglars say they “break in” simply by walking through an unlocked door or climbing through an unlocked window

  3. Consider making your door kick proof - yes apparently this is possible to do with special locks

  4. Don’t ignore a knock at the door - sometimes burglars check to see if anyone is home, by knocking on the door. If you answer, they will make an excuse and leave

  5. Keep your radio or television on while you’re at work

  6. Prune those shrubs - Burglars value their privacy while they’re breaking and entering. Theoretically, if every house on a particular street seems empty, a burglar will choose to target the house that offers the most privacy. To deter would-be burglars, keep the shrubs around your house well-trimmed

  7. Keep the outside of your house well-lit - solar downlights are an effective way to light pathways, without impacting on our dark sky light restrictions

  8. Change up your daily routine

  9. Watch what you say on social media - those holiday snaps you post up on facebook could actually be announcing when you are leaving for holiday and when your house will be empty

  10. Get a camera and/or alarm system

Gutter cleaning can be a dangerous task and one that few homeowners look forward to each year. Here's some tips on how you can stay safe while cleaning your gutters. And if you just don't feel like getting up on that roof, give us a call or message and we'll safely get the job done for you. #binnspropertyworks.co.nz https://www.binnspropertyworks.co.nz/

1. Use a safe and sturdy ladder, preferably one with a small shelf strong enough to hold a bucket to collect gutter debris

2. Secure the bucket with a lanyard

3. Get someone to foot the ladder

4. Observe the 'three points of contact' rule

5. For every metre in height, the ladder should extend out from the vertical surface at the base by about 250mm. This minimises chances of the ladder failing backward or the bottom sliding away.
